Goal: Turning an overwhelming relocation into a clear plan
The idea for BoxShift came from a personal need. After a trip to Greece, I started thinking seriously about what it would take to move there. One question came up almost immediately: where do you even start?
Relocating abroad involves much more than finding a place to live and packing your belongings. Depending on the user’s situation, it can involve documents, healthcare, taxes, transportation, finances, pets, and children’s education.
The goal was to turn this fragmented process into a clear roadmap that helps users understand what needs to be done and reduces the amount of information they have to organise on their own.

Personalization: Building a roadmap around each move
The onboarding was designed to understand the user’s situation before generating a personalized relocation plan.
Users are asked who they are moving with, whether they are relocating alone, with a partner, child, or pet, what their plans are after the move, and what they are taking with them. The onboarding also considers the planned moving date.
These answers directly shape the experience that follows. They determine which tasks appear in the user’s roadmap, when those tasks should be completed, and what guidance is shown for each step.
For example, a user moving with a pet may receive additional tasks related to documentation, transport, and preparation, while someone moving for work or study may see a different set of priorities and deadlines.
Each task also includes step-by-step guidance, helping users understand not only what needs to be done, but how to complete it and when to take action.
This makes the roadmap responsive to the user’s specific circumstances rather than relying on a generic relocation checklist.
Design Approach: Providing context at every step
I wanted BoxShift to go beyond a standard checklist. Completing a task often requires additional information, preparation, documents, or external resources, so each step was designed to provide this context before the user takes action.
Tasks can include estimated completion time, practical guidance, required documents, links to official sources, and access to AI assistance when additional help is needed.
The challenge was deciding how much information to show at each stage. The main task view needed to remain easy to scan, while more detailed guidance had to stay accessible without overwhelming the user.
This led to a layered structure where users can quickly understand what needs to be done and open additional information only when they need it.
Final Solution: A personalized roadmap instead of a generic checklist
The final concept combines task management, practical guidance, and additional support in one relocation roadmap.
The pet relocation flow is one example. Instead of simply telling the user to “Get a pet passport,” BoxShift breaks the process into smaller steps and provides context around documentation, transport, and preparing the pet for the journey.
By connecting individual tasks with practical information and next steps, BoxShift is designed to help users move through a complex relocation process with a clearer understanding of what needs their attention.
